The 2010 Global Hunger Index released on Sunday showed there was "alarming" hunger in 25 out of the 122 countries surveyed, AFP reported.

It said poverty, conflict and political instability were the main causes.

"The economic performance and hunger levels are inversely correlated. South and southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Timor-Leste are among countries with hunger levels considerably higher than their gross national incomes," the IFPRI said in its report.

The report highlights four African countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Eritrea and Chad as the worst famished.

Nepal, Cambodia, India and Bangladesh are among the Asian countries on the alarm list.

The hunger index is based on calculations of the proportion of malnourished people. It also takes the prevalence of underweight children and child mortality levels into consideration.
