Nigeria Immigration Service to use biometrics to handle immigration

The Nigeria Immigration Service has announced that it will install biometrics equipment across all border posts in the country.

Immigration Service Acting Controller-General, Rilwan Musa made the announcement this week after a visit to the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to a report in Leadership.ng Musa said the country’s borders are porous and need to be fortified through the introduction of biometrics. He also said biometric equipment would be placed at airports and that it will give accurate data of individuals for the next 40 years.

Another positive outcome of this, according to Musa, is that clearance time at airports will be greatly improved with the implementation of these new systems.

“We are trying to put biometrics equipment in place. The passengers are expected to be given speedy clearance on arrival after over eight hours flight,” Musa said. “Our intention is to have these officers on observation trips so that by the time they come back, I believe they will improve on what they are doing.”

Nigeria has become a hotbed for biometric deployments and national objectives. Famously, as reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation recently signed a formal agreement with Orbit Technologies to install biometric workforce management systems in the country’s hotels and other hospitality outfits.
