A Detroit mother is thanking God that she happened to be at her daughter’s school the day the young girl fell into a massive sinkhole.

“It was God, that’s all I can say. It was God,” Monica Lindsey told WJBK-TV. “I wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Lindsey, a bus driver, described waving at her eight-year-old daughter as the girl arrived at J.R. King Elementary School on Detroit’s west side. But as her daughter waved back, Lindsey said, “she fell in the hole!”

Lindsey said the child was up to her neck in freezing water and shouting, “Momma, help!”

“It just swallowed her!” Lindsey recalled with emotion. After she nearly “lost [her] heart” pulling her daughter out of the sinkhole, she added, “another little boy fell right in!” She pulled him out, too.

Lindsey, still shaken by how differently the situation could have ended had she not been there, said the school administrators said they must not have seen the “new” hole with all the snow.

“There’s, like, three sinkholes by the school!” Lindsey remarked with shock, adding that there are “waterline breaks everywhere.”

In light of the most recent event, the city has dispatched a team to fix the sinkholes, but it is certainly not a day Lindsey will soon forget.

“I was angry. I had sweat, tears, and all I could think about was my daughter drowning in this hole right in front of my eyes!” she said. Fox
