Jordan's King Abdullah fires government as Islamic protests grow

Jordan's Royal Palace announced that King Abdullah sacked his government in the wake of street protests over rising prices and has asked an ex-army general,Marouf al-Bakhit, to form a new Cabinet. Abdullah's move comes after thousands of Jordanians took to the streets — inspired by the regime ouster in Tunisia and the turmoil in Egypt — and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Samir Rifai. The Royal Palace said Rifai's Cabinet resigned on Tuesday.
The Muslim Brotherhood is considered a leading force behind the public protests, organizing them to follow Friday prayers. About 3,500 opposition activists from Jordan's main Islamist opposition group, trade unions and leftist organizations gathered in Amman's downtown, waving colorful banners reading: "Send the corrupt guys to court."

Members of the Islamic Action Front, the political wing of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and Jordan's largest opposition party, swelled the ranks of the demonstrators, massing outside the al-Husseini mosque in Amman and filling the downtown streets with their prayer lines.

The Sunni Hashemite monarchy tries to control the 70% Palestinian majority, attempting to prevent Jordan from becoming another Palestinian state.
